Old picture of Kirkwall Basin

Craig writes:
'This picture of the basin is undated but is initaled J.V. (Valentine?) I like the detail in the picture with the sailing ships alongside the fishing boats and the piles of boxes which I assume are keep boxes for shellfish- probably lobsters. Also the Kirkwall Hotel has not been built maybe this will help date the scene?'

Date is an estimate.

Comments:
The year is 1888. A print of this picture hung in the Kirkwall Hotel when the Georges had it. Brian Sutherland from Pipersquoy worked at the hotel and saw this picture every day. 20 years later while working at the red cross and sorting out some old books the original photo fell out of a book and landed at his feet!!
