Kirkwall Pier- The Openings

The filling in of the "openings". These were under surface galleries through which livestock was loaded/unloaded. A good sillock fishing place.
The man watching is Geordie Skea. He was a storeman with Orkney Islands Shipping Company Ltd.

Comments:
When I was peedie (forty-five odd years ago) Raymond Sinclair, Robby Harcus and myself, Barbara Jolly used to go fishing here - yes sillocks (perhaps Billy Wylie came with us as well). I'm thinking of the poor cattle as it was ever so slippy in these galleries as the seaweed grew on the stone floors and walls plus it was dark and every noise echoed. We used to catch ten, twenty fish no bother and take them home to mum who gave them to our pet seagull "Donald". I'm sure our neighbours weren't please as the sky was black with birds fighting for the fish! Thank you for bringing back such happy memories to me. (
