First full time business studies students

1977
40 years ago this year, the KGS Further Education Centre started its first full-time Business Studies courses. At the end of the one-year course, the group (13 of us) hoped to have obtained a SCOTBEC Secretarial Certificate (or Junior Certificate), Higher Grade Secretarial Studies, O Grade Accounting and an assortment of RSA and Pitman certificates. Head of Business Studies, Mrs Frances Mitchell (typing and accounts) is pictured with Mrs Nan Young (shorthand and audio-typing) and Miss Margaret Mowat (office practice) with the mugs presented to them on our last day, 16 June 1977. A few weeks previously, the class had all received Easter eggs from Norman Mitchell for typing out the invitations to the first St Magnus Festival. Further education in Orkney has moved on since then!
