The slug that went from A to B

This is what confronted me when I came downstairs this morning (18 May). A slug on my carpet, leaving a slime-trail more than 10 feet long.
I like the sharp left-hander it made at x, but how on earth did it get to A in the first place? I don't normally share my house with slugs, and carpets spell doom to gastropods - indeed this one had already expired, presumably from dehydration after putting out all that mucus.

Comments:
Astute suggestion Steven. I don't have any pets but occasional visitors have brought dogs in. I had no visitors on 17 May, but maybe it fell off me!
