There now follows a long tale of a member of our family, above in this fine photograph possibly taken in the late 50s.
This is our Grandfathers sister so my Grand Aunt whose name was I think Lizzy who would have gone away to service in the south like so many of Orkney's young lasses in bygone days.
Lizzy married Walter Gove who I think hailed from around Dundee and was in the employment of one of the jam makers of Dundee and was sent to the Hawaiian Islands as a fruit buyer - this would have been soon after the Great war,Lizzie and Walter had two young children at the time and after a time in Honolulu Walter sent word for Lizzie to come out to join him.
Lizzie would have traveled to Southhampton and onward to the eastern seaboard of America and then by train to the west coast and onward to Honolulu to join him, a journey that must have taken weeks and all this with two young kids!!.
They never returned to Scotland again although their grand children have been here a few times.
All this a mighty feat for a wee lass brought up at Brough South Ronaldsay.

Attractive picture and intriguing 'back story' John. Gove is an uncommon name. Any relation to Michael Gove, the coalition Government Education Secretary?

Gove is an east coast name. Mainly around Johnshaven and St Cyrus. My maternal grand father was Capt James Gove who sailed with Hogarth (hungry Hogarth) line Fortunately Michael Gove was adopted!

Thanks Jim. It was certainly fortunate for Michael that he found a mother who could, presumably, love him; but I assume you regard it as your good fortune that he's no blood relation of yours. It's fascinating where lighthouses can lead you . . .

I think maybe Walter belonged as a bairn tae "Gourden" if that is how it's spelt?.
