I wonder if your aunt ever saw the Hitchcock film of "The 39 Steps" near the beginning of which a spy called Annabella Smith is murdered in Richard Hannay's flat.

I doubt if she saw the film, Paul, but she certainly read John Buchan's book, in which the murder victim is not Annabella Smith but a man called Scudder. I have a feeling Annabella Smith appeared only in Hitchcock's version of the story, along with many other changes to the original. Great film though - by far the best of the several made with that title.
