Hoy High and Hoy Low

Hoy High and Hoy Low - September 9th 2010
Picture added on 15 September 2010 at 13:14
Comments:
People sometimes express puzzlement as to why these lights are called Hoy High and Hoy Low when neither is actually on the island of Hoy. (Both are on Graemsay.)
The explanation, given elsewhere on this site I believe, is that their common names are shortened from their official names which are Hoy Sound High and Hoy Sound Low Lights. Together they act as leading lights for vessels passing through the Sound, rather than as warnings not to bump into Hoy.
