This is Fred Johnston Sen, father of Capt Fred.
Fred Sen was Cox of the Longhope Lifeboat and earned a Bronze medel award for his leadership at the rescue from the "Oljaren"ashore on the Pentland Skerries.
I got to know Fred in his later life when he returned to Longhope after retiring from being a police man at Dounreay.
Fred was a straight talking no bloody nonsense man and left you in no doubt as to what he thought, just the way I like people to be.
Fred served in the Naval reserve during the war and returned to work at Lyness after hostilities ended, also like most Brims men he went to the fishing, his brother Bob was Engineer on the Lifeboat and they served together a number of years. Photo taken around 1950

Many a good laugh we had with Fred and Alice when they lived down at Greenbank. We couldn't have wished for better neighbours.

Fred asked a couple of us tae gae him a hand tae take down a shed at Lyness. The shed had indeed been a carpenters shop close to the war grave cemetary where among other things the coffins for war dead were made, rather a poignant place. Anyway as we began the task of dismantling the building, which incidentally was screwed together with brass screws (no war shortage at Lyness!).
Now the man Fred bought the shed from kept on visiting us to offer all kinds of useles advice, one morning Fred had had enough of it, and said to him "Will you bu**er off, you are nothing but a damn pest!!" This was the Fred we all loved!!.
