I think they were from Sandside in Gramesay, but am not certain on this point.

They are listed in the 1901 census at Sandside, Graemsay. Samuel was aged 57, farmer and postmaster, with nine daughters and two sons.

Agnes was married to my uncle Jim Johnston and they went to Canada. They had three sons Gordon, Cameron and Dennis.

This photo was taken at Sandside beside the old house where the family would originally have lived before the "new" house was built. Samuel's father (Henry "Harry" Sutherland) was born in Flotta but moved to Walls (island of Hoy) around 1830, and then to Sandside on Graemsay. (I now live at Sandside and am really interested in the Sutherland history).

Charles Ritch was my Uncle and her was born in 1906 and leslie Ritch was born in 1911 so the photo must have been taken about 1912

Jane Anne should read Agnes (was called Addie by her friends) It is Clara (my Grandmother)

Why does someone always get behind another person (behind Catherine) in a group photo! The person on whose knee Charles Ritch is sitting is "Uncle Dan" Sutherland Mrs Gilchrist's father.
