This headland was graveyard to a lot of ships, mostly trawlers, and so many in the 1920s that a light was established- I believe around 1930, not too sure of the date.

This led to more strandings as it was thought vessels passed to the north of the light thinking it was the lighthouse on Stroma and led them onto the Berry Head or Hawick.

Perhaps someone will elaborate on my little mention of this part of Hoy's unforgiving coast.
Some of the vessels I can think of were Dorby, Braken Moor, Geiser, Solanion, Leicestershire, Worsley-, Carmainia, Lans and more that don't come to mind at this time.

Maybe some historians out there can think of some others and please dont be afraid to correct me, I have been known to be wrong in the odd time!!.

Well done on the photo's Willie.

Incidently the moor land inland of Torness is called The Waasly Moor (westerly) and has peat moss as deep as 20 or more feet, not a place to go with a 10 ton tractor in winter.

I believe the placing of this light was partially responsible for the wrecking of the Johanna Thorden. The Captain did not know about the new light and mistook it for another and went ashore on Swona.
