SS Camoens damaged by drift ice on Hunafloi Bay, outside the emigration port Borðeyri, in the summer of 1883. Sometimes the Polar drift ice delayed or even damaged the Emigration ships, so the people had to wait for weeks or even months in uncertainty.

This appears to be the same ship as Bill Sinclair's entry number 14972

I'm researching my Icelandic ancestors who left Iceland in 1882 via the S.S. Camoens. For those interested, there is a book called "Icelandic River Saga" that contains a few tales of the Camoens, and is available in searchable pdf format at this website: manitobia.ca/resources/books/local_histories/280.pdf

Would anyone know the source of this photo of the SS Camoens? I would like to use it to illustrate a book I am writing about an Icelandic family that sailed on the Camoens for America in 1879. I need to find the owner of the photo. Thanks, Matt Nickerson, [email protected]

The ship was damaged at Norðurfjörður in 1883. The mountain is Reykjarneshyrna. They were trapped by the ice during repairs and had to stay there from June until late July when they sailed to Borðeyri.
The photo is believed to have belonged to merchant Þorlákur Ólafsson Johnson, 1838-1917. It was a part of a collection given to the National museum of Iceland by Þorvaldur Jónsson Thoroddsen, 1855-1921.
