Wheelwrights on the Clay Loan

Peter writes:
'....the location is the foot of the Clay Loan approximately at the point where it meets the road into the back of the West End Hotel.

From left to right are Mr. E. Macgillivray, Mr Sydney Garrioch( Saddler), Mr. Peter (Pat) Burges, Mr Garrioch the owner of the business, with number 5 unknown.

This would have been a thriving business no doubt, long before the days of the internal combustion engine.'

The date is an estimate.

Comments:
Think the date may be circa 1930s, but am checking on it - reckon that the Garriochs were my husband's grandfather and greatgrandfather.

Believe Sydney was my husband's grandfather and the date of 1920 would be about right.

Kathy you are correct your ex husband Peter`s Mother Jean was my father David sister and Sydney was their father with Mary Garrioch (Reid) being their Mother. The nice thing is about 50 years after that photo I bought one of the houses further up the row shown behind them.

William Garrioch was my great, great uncle. who lived at 10, Clay Loan until his death in 1947. The Wheelwright's Workshop was located almost opposite 10, Clay Loan and continued to run until about 1940 so the approx date of the photograph of the mid 1930's is correct.
The original Wheelwright's business was established by William's father John who was still involved in the business (age 67) in 1901 (See 1901 Census)
I don't know if Sydney and William were related. Perhaps Shane knows more!

The photo was taken sometime in the early/mid 1930's. Approximate location almost opposite 10 Clay Loan.
The Garrioch Cartwright and Wheelwright business was established by my great, great grandfather John Garrioch in the mid 1850's. The business was passed on to son William Garrioch (forth from left in photo) in the early 1900's and continued to trade until the late 1930's
As far as I know Sidney Garrioch (Saddler) shown in this photo is not a relation to William.
