The "Johanna Thorden" was wrecked on Swona on her maiden voyage. Two lifeboats carrying 38 passengers and crew managed to leave the ship safely, but one capsized and all in it drowned. The other lifeboat reached South Ronaldsay but capsized in surf and only 8 survived.
