Comments:
The ceremony took place in the Cathedral on Wednesday 15th December 1954 at 3 pm. I have a copy of the programme. Provost James Flett, J.P. was in the chair. The programme reads:

1. The Audience will join in the singing of Psalm 100.

2. Prayer - The Rev. V. C. Pogue, Moderator of the Presbytery of Orkney.

3. The Town Clerk will intimate apologies for absence received.

4. The Provost will address the audience.

5. The Provost will call upon the Town Clerk to read the Resolution of the Town Council to confer the Freedom of the Burgh on Dr Marwick.

6. The Town Clerk will read the Resolution.

7. The Provost will welcome Dr Marwick and deliver an Address of Appreciation and will thereafter call upon the Town Clerk to read the Burgess Ticket in favour of Dr Marwick and to administer the Burgess Oath.

8. The Town Clerk will read the Burgess Ticket and will administer the Burgess Oath.

9. Dr Marwick will sign the Burgess Roll. [pictured]

10. The Provost will present the Burgess Ticket to Dr Marwick.

11. Dr Marwick will reply.

12. The audience will join in the singing of Paraphrase 2.

13. Benediction.

14. National Anthem.
