While on passage from the Tyne to Canada in ballast the Norwegian ore carrier DOVREFJELL of some 9,862 tons gross ran aground on the Pentland Skerries in the early hours of Feb 03-1956 in poor weather conditions. Because of wind and sea conditions it was not possible for the lifeboats to effect a rescue. The crew were airlifted off by helecopters and landed on the mainland of Scotland, She was refloated some weeks later by Metal Industries, The tugs Salveda and the Metinda 3. Thank you for posting this photo. My father was one of the sailors rescued that night. He still has the newspapers published the day after, describing the event.
