A Tom Kent picture, date unknown. At picture #1300 Cathleen Spence wonders if there is picture showing the houses to the right of Croy's- here one is, taken from where the road widens just before the Red Cross Shop. The smooth fronted building on the left I believe will be the current day Bruce's Stores. The building up the street on the left with the cut-off corner has made way for the Orkney Hotel car park and entrance.

The smooth-fronted building was, I believe, the home of Provost Robert Slater, owner of W H Irvine's bootshop (then situated further down the street on the ground floor of the Plymouth Brethren building). Apparently his house was referred to as "Lix" because he had its number (59) put up in Roman numerals.

In this photograph there are two drains or "sires" in the middle of the road. Directly opposite the drain on the left and where the dark shade on the first building ends is a lane called "Gunns Close" Gunns Close links up with Junction Road and still exists today. Number 4 Gunns Close belonged to my Grandfather "Robert Borwick". Our family such as it was lived there for a short time with our Grandfather until a council house was made available at 8 Garrioch Street. The building in the centre of the picture with the lamp on it? I think that is now the Royal Hotel.

My wife's Great Great Grandparents (John and Sarah Beetles) lived in Victoria Street in the 1870s. Thanks for posting the photograph.
