How old is this boat? Is this the boat that is in the Longhope Lifeboat Museum?
Added by Sandy on 15 July 2008
yes Sandy, she is indeed in the museum, she came into service in 1933 and left Longhope in 1962.

I was taken out to the Stronsay lifeboat one time in the 1950s and when I said to the engineer "why is there such a heavy mast on a life boat" he explained that "it wasn't a mast, it was an exhaust". Is that the case on this boat also?

On the first life boat I served on, the Hilton Briggs, ex Aberdeed l/b, the exhaust did indeed go up the mast. It was a good job it did as the reek she sent oot would have choked a horse, and it was well away from the crew- no emission tests then!

I dont think so. The newer lifeboats at the time, like the TGB (Watson) had the exaust up the mast, as such and probably at the time the Oakley and the Barnett. I cant be sure, maybe Stewart, Fred or John can help.

No the exhaust on the Thomas McCunn never went up the mast. She had a funnel just ford. of the cockpit and this can be seen in the above picture. Some of the older lifeboats like the KTJS had a hefty mast, in case the sails were required, but I dont think the McCunn was ever rigged for sails. She had two engines, whereas the KTJS only had one.
