Taken on 29th October showing the proprietor of Leonards, Stevensons and Spences with the newly arrived daily papers. This picture complements nicely a picture of George's grandfather pictured outside Stevensons, which I think appeared in the Orkney Today- unfortunately we don't have a copy on this site.

For those of us what haven't set foot in Kirkwall for quite a number of years, when did the white Career place mid-picture stop being Leonards the newsagent? It was quite a major part of any shopping trip when I was little...

Must be ten years or more, Mike. It first became the Orkney Opportunities Centre, then latterly was absorbed into Careers Scotland.
Leonards is still on the go though, in what used to George Rendall's (and then J&J Smith's), the larger shop diagonally across from the old Leonards- see picture #947

Sorry Leonards has gone too, Neil Stevenson moved his music shop Grooves to there and it opened yesterday,

Does anyone know when the various Leonards shops opened? Was there just the two of them?
