It looked like an early morning view of a comet - until I realised it was moving.
Delta Airlines flight DAL8 en-route from Atlanta to Dubai, about halfway, over the North Sea east of Orkney. Believe it or not that is the shortest route!

Someone near Stavanger has put a 'radar' plot online of aircraft crossing the North Sea (don't have a direct link, you've got to download something called a vnc viewer). You can then find the detailed route on an American site 'flightaware.com'.
