Stones of Stennis

No idea about the date. A very old unused postcard published by Giulio Fugaccia, Stromness. What ever happened to the "table" ? Was it true that people had just put the stone on top for fun or was it really a sacraficial stone?

Comments:
Stones of Stenness, haunt of troll-men,
Used to have a kind of dolmen.
God knows what it was installed for -
It was totally uncalled-for.

The "table" was erected in 1907 as an attempt of reconstruction. The top was pushed off in 1972 and, after excavations carried out by Graham Ritchie, was not re-erected because it was unhistorical. (see: Anna Ritchie, Prehistoric Orkney, Edinburgh 1995, pp. 74-78.)
