SS Irene at Grimness, South Ronaldsay

This picture taken in the early 1970s. Probably 1971 or 1972. The ship I have long forgotten the name of, so please help me out, was in the process of being scrapped when the picture was taken. I have also forgotten where on the island the picture as taken. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

[The Longhope Lifeboat was lost in 1969 when trying to rescue this ship. Search on this site for 'SS Irene' and 'Longhope lifeboat' for context of the tragedy. See particularly picture #26274 and picture #26760 - Steven]

Thanks for the information. My father knew some of the crew on the Longhope Lifeboat

My father was on that ship as part of the crew. Eight men from the RNLI died trying to save them at sea. They were eventually rescued by the coastguard when the ship ran aground.
