Huts beside the hotel housed RAF personnel working 18 seaplanes off Stenness Loch in summer of 1918. Hotel had an Operations Room with large wall map for plotting U-boats sited from the air or sea.

I have discovered a bit more; the peedie building on the left is the Stenness Post Office and shop. It is thought to have been built by my Grandfather John Firth Spence, the local postie. He was posted missing in 1917 at Salonika. In the fifties the building was moved in one piece to the shore of Birsay and is still there. Seen it many times in complete ignorance of its past.
