Waas youth c1937

Tommy Chalmers, Walter Ross, Danny Ritch, Jim Ross at the Ayre of Brims. Date and place written on back of photo but I wonder if my father and Jim look a little older than 16 and 18?

Good to see Danny and your dad as young chaps.

This photo is taken on the road passing the Smiddy Trees leading to the small pier used and I think built by the Laird of Melsetter for his own private yacht or any other boats they may have used.
In my time this pier was a place to haul a boat for winter although a vessel could lie at moorings just off the pier in almost any weather being sheltered from any airt: I suppose only east nor east would fetch up the bay but not troublesome, never heard of a boat damaged at that anchorage.

Only thing I hauled in at that bit of road there John was a car with a puncture and no spare tyre one night as Mervyn and me were heading home from the club. It looked as if we would have a long walk home when along came the peedie joiner and Ella. It ended up a right long night for Mervyn and me and even longer for dad later on and I'll tell you the story sometime John.

Ah yes,I'd recognise Walter Ross anywhere. He was a first cousin of my ex-husband Laurie Sutherland, I am still in touch with his widow Tess who now lives in Inverness.
