Found this beautiful picture while researching my Grandfather who immigrated to Canada early 1900's. His name was Thomas William Sutherland and his father was Isaac Sutherland and they are listed as having the address: Swartland, Walls, Orkney - is that near this where this picture is taken? Beautiful scenery.

I'll submit a map that may help Leslie.

Leslie, Swartland is on the Island that you see in the distance, but at the opposite side.

This is similar to the view I used to have from my attic bedroom in the Melvich Hotel where I worked for a couple of years in the mid 1950's. I could see the Old Man of Hoy because Melvich isn't as far west as Strathy. Lovely photo!

Leslie ,I look accross at Swartland every day. I am sorry to say the house and ou buildings are now at ruin, it was a tidy farm at one time but has been allowed to fall into neglect in the last years .
I think the Sutherland family were the same stock as the Sutherland's of Haybrake Farm at Lyness.

That is very interesting, John, thank you. I would love to meet some of the old timers in the area. I was really happy to receive an email from Karl with a picture of the area (old farmhouse) and an older map showing Swartland. Thanks again to Karl as well.

Super photo. When I lived in Thurso in the 1970's, driving home from Dounreay I could see the Brims Ness area, it seemed so near yet so far in them days before the RoRo Ferries.
