South isles

Name that island in the middle! Picture snapped 20 September 2012 on board a Saab 340 heading home to Kirkwall from Aberdeen. ( Not Cava, clever clogs!)

South Ronaldsay. Not technically an island any more because it is linked to the Mainland

Flotta Switha Fara and Cava, lying between South Ron and Hoy

South Ron is still an island. It's surrounded by the sea. Just because it's connected by a man made structure doesn't change that fact. It's only "TECHNICALLY NOT AN ISLAND" when it suits OIC.

According to my dictionary, an island is a mass of land surrounded by water. You cannot sail right round South Ronaldsay so it is not an island. I live on an island and pay to cross the water between my home and the Mainland. If South Ronaldsay wants to be an island maybe the residents should be paying to reach the Mainland!!

And what would be the name of the island upon which you reside Ann ?

That's not hard to find out. Why should I answer a question from an "Anonymous" person?

(I suspect some Longhope/Hoy stirring from our anonymous contributor - Steven)

Quite right Anne! Ignore everything from anonymous people.

If "anonymous" is so smart they will know that I live on the Island, repeat Island of Hoy, in the parish of South Walls and that my postal address is Longhope because that is the local post office. As a senior citizen, I pay over £4 return each time I travel on the ferry, on foot, to the Mainland. With a car it is considerably more. That said, I'm very happy on my island and have no wish to move to one of the "linked" bits.
