Visit aboard HMS Lyness

October 1971
Another photo with HMS Lyness in the background.
On the left Margaret Kirkpatrick, middle? on the right Alice Johnston. Don't know who is in the wheel house. Could it be Billy Budge on the right?

Comments:
Not nitpicking but it's RFA Lyness, (Royal Fleet Auxiliary), not HMS.

I just remember that trip Beryl, I was 6 at the time, I remember some of the crew were dressed as pirates, Would I be right to say that there was a dance in the YM that night? It would be great to see some more photos of that day, must be a few kicking about some where.

Your memory is better than mine about the pirates but I remember the home made ice cream and free drink went down well. It was a beautiful sunny day and there was a dance in the YM at night.

I sailed on the RFA Lyness as Signalman, signing on the vessel on the 12th July 1977 and signing off on the 14th October 1977,the crew were Maltese with British officers.
On 15 November 1980, the ship was acquired by charter by the United States Military Sealift Command and renamed USNS Sirius (T-AFS 8). She was purchased outright on 1 March 1982. On 1 July 2005, she was renamed Texas Clipper III and was transferred to the United States Maritime Administration to become the Texas Maritime Academy's new training ship.
