Gara , Orphir- Slater family

Gara, Orphir - William and Tomima Slater and their daughter Annie (later Mrs Donald Cumming, 15 East Road, Kirkwall). No later than 1913 as William died that year and Annie married. Tomima was a Groundwater from Scorriedale, the house with one of the best views in Orkney.

Comments:
Tomima must be my great grand aunty, sister of James F Groundwater of the shop in Albert Street.
(My great grandad).
Wonderful to come across this photo.

James F. Groundwater was my great grandfather so Tomina would be my great grand auntie too (I think). My grandfather, James too, used to use Scorriedale as a holiday home. Visited a few times in the fifties.

Yes Tomima was indeed the sister of James F Groundwater. Also sister of Alexander W Groundwater, Congregational minister in Coupar Angus (previously in Shetland). Very interesting character who stood as a candidate for the Independent Labour Party in Banffshire in 1924 (and lost) and later turned down the invitation to stand in Perth and Kinross in the 1930s.
