Misty Isle at the Clytus steps

The "Misty Isle" in the water at the steps on the East side of the Kirkwall Pier. She was built for Smith Foubister, by Smith Foubister and fellow Boatbuilder and friend Dave Mitchell in Scapa Garage in 1972. She was later sold to Norman Muir and Aly Kirkpatrick who used her for clam diving for many years, they were among the first commercial Divers for Clams in and around Kirkwall bay and the Isles. She had owners in Stromness and Westray and back to Kirkwall. The" Misty"as she was known has weathered the years well at 48 years old.I remember doing the names for her. Added by Phil Brough.

Nice that they are still called the "Clytus" steps - its sort of like "the pylons" and "Leonard's corner.

[Maybe just by me though! Also add "The Black Building", "Turfus's", and "Work's Shop" - Steven]

I remember telling the boys the car would be at the back of Leonard's. We waited for a while and found them at the back of George Rendall's (Grooves).

It is good that they are known as the Clytus steps but i doot she never used that steps. The steps that she used were nearer the shed and were filled in when the marshaling area was made

The "Clytus Steps" were used for many years by Willie Nicolson's boat the "Sheena Willie and his family ran a good hire service from Shapinsay to Kirkwall daily, a few times a day and often in the evenings, taking in the Shapinsay Football Team who played in the Parish Cup games in the very early 50s and also on Friday and Saturday night dances in the"Cosmo Ballroom", the highlight of the week for many.
