Lifeboat in Kirkwall Basin

This photo was taken sometime in the 1970's, and I'm sure it is of the " Grace Paterson Ritchie ". Correct me if I am wrong. .... Russ Battrick.

Comments:
It's not the Grace Paterson Ritchie, as it was a 70ft boat, 70-002. If the number is 48-016 as appears to be the case, it will be Solent class boat 'Douglas Currie'

It is definitely a Solent and probably the Douglas Currie

Its definately not the Grace Paterson Ritchie & indeed a 48' Solent Class as you can clearly see the steel plating on the hull. All the Solents were constructed from steel

It is Douglas Currie, she now lives at Portishead Quays Marina on the Bristol Channel.

This is indeed a Mk 11 Solent and stationed for only a short time at Kirkwall (she was too small for Kirkwall). Jackie Groat our then Hon Sec tried to get one of the Mk11 type for us at Longhope as the Mk11 had several better modifications such as a seated steering position and water tight wheelhouse doors- our Solent seemed to have funnels to encourage the Pentland Firth to enter the wheelhouse!! However although Jackie was very well connected at higher levels in the RNLI he did not manage to get us the Mk 11. We liked our Solent class and she served us until 1988 when we were allocated a Tyne class slipway boat.
I have seen this one or one like this in Bristol docks as a pleasure boat.
