Its a sad reflection on society that the Basin is too polluted now to safely use for a swimming gala

The Basin wasn't always very clean when we swam in it.

I mind hearing that my father Tommy Hourston was a regular swimmer at the Kirkwall basin and swam to Shapinsay regular back in the day.
