Enterprise in Stromness

Tom writes:
I'm attaching one now that I took in Stromness a few years ago, not sure just when, of the Enterprise leaving port on what I believe was a round the Flow trip for tourists. It was a lovely calm evening and I tried to capture the reflections and mood of the moment.

Photographers may be interested to know that the FP4+ film was exposed in a French Semflex Automat 6x6 twin lens reflex. I made the print on Kodak Supra colour paper with RA4 chemistry with filters to give the sepia effect. This gave me a bit of a headache as PAGB and SPF rules dictated that if any part of the process was colour material the print was "colour", but the judges considered it was "monochrome" - you can't win them all!

The last time I saw the Enterprise she was lying in the Basin at Kirkwall undergoing a refit. Where is she now?

I'd love to paint this, you captured the reflections and mood perfectly, I was studying the photograph and my first thoughts were that it was a shame there should be a crane in the picture, but on hindsight it portrays that whilst the scene is calm and tranquil the crane is the unseen bustle of the whole setting, it brings to the mind all the other sounds that were obviously present....

Actually the trips went wherever the tourists fancied going, and sometimes we just took her out for fun. Sometimes. She is still in Irvine, but my father is proposing her as a new Loch Ness training and ferry project. If you have any stories about her he would be glad to hear them. There is also a documentary about her which may be shown at the Annual Maritime Heritage Conference in Barcelona in April. If you want any more photos please contact either myself or my father.
