message written on the reverse:-

Blown up in Longhope Bay June 1917
Picked up on the shore two months after the explosion

Correction to the above photograph the H.M.S Vanguard was not blown up in Longhope bay, she was just north of Flotta when the tragic event took place, maybe the photo was found in Longhope bay and that is how the confusion came about.
