Wow!! quite a lot of people! How many men? what are they up for? After that period did any men from Orkney join the fleet? (If yes how many?)

These men were probably lined up during the visit in May 1898 of the German Fleet at their conclusion of manoeuvres in the Western Baltic, not many Orkney men joining their fleet! Photograph 1308 shows the fleet at the top of the picture.

Three years late in answering the last comment, but this and picture #1308, as stated in the caption, show the visit of the British Channel Fleet. The German fleet visited Lerwick, not Kirkwall, in 1904.
